People Quit Today

Lou invited Rocky and I over for cookies and cream ice cream. Rocky ate until he couldn't eat anymore and I thought he had a bottomless pit stomach. Well, he ate a lot.

Lou's wife recently died in the spring, they had been married for 60 years. He said he was always the one getting sick and she never got sick and the one time she does, it killed her. They met when he was 17, her father who didn't think much of Lou cancelled their wedding at the church without them knowing. He went to see the priest and the priest told him his wedding has been cancelled and that he refused to book anymore wedding for that day because he felt it was a bad day for weddings. The reason being Lou's wedding was the second wedding that got cancelled for that date. So a few days later they eloped.

Lou recollected on when they dated, she would show up with swells on her body from her father's beatings just because he saw fit. He said she had it really hard when she was young. So he spent his entire life trying to make sure she got whatever she wanted, wether it was shopping, trips, etc.. he never said no to her and encouraged her instead.

He said they had one thing they agreed on when they married which was to never go to sleep angry. So they would talk it out and work it out before going to sleep and not carry it into the next day. He said this worked until the kids came along. He said the kids were instigators and there would be a lot of confusion between them. Lou said, people today quit too easily.

When his wife's mother died, Lou suggested the father who didn't treat Lou so nice to come and live with them because none of his kids wanted to take him in. That was amazing to hear. Lou had a big enough of heart to do that. He lived with them for 8 years. When Lou's father died, he also invited his mother to live with them and at one point there was four of them in the house. His mother and her father found company in each other.

Lou said he was told about Golden Years and so he did his best in working two jobs to prepare for their Golden Years. But now their Golden Years is just him, all alone in a 5 bedroom double story house, and his money that's all gonna go to his children. He said people have a misunderstanding about the golden years. There is nothing golden about the golden years. This stops working, that starts to fail. The medication, the smell, the lack of control, the embarrassment, the shame, and the choice of isolation and terrible loneliness. To Lou, there is nothing golden about the golden years.
